From time to time, the Litter-Robot will need a deeper clean, depending on how many cats you have, and how they use their toilet. The temperature will also have an effect. For example, in Perth over the cooler months, with one cat, my deep clean is only every 4-5 months. But with summer heat and humidity, or if Shadow has sprayed above the litter level, a more thorough clean is needed. It’s good to know that the Litter-Robot Open Air is designed to be simple to clean, and robust. The main body is made with standard plastics. The liner is made out of PVC (black rubber). We recommend cleaning the unit as needed. Simply wiping it down with a damp paper towel will keep your unit clean. Using a mild detergent is recommended. Do not use bleach on the units as this can cause the plastic to degrade. Common household cleaners can be used, again, avoid bleach and do not spray directly onto the unit.
The globe should be fully cleaned a minimum of twice a year. The base can be wiped down with a dry or damp cloth as needed. Turn off the unit and unplug the unit from the wall prior to any deep cleaning.
There are no electronics in the Globe or waste drawer so you can soak these a tub or hose them down. While the globe and waste drawer are drying, you can use a vacuum to remove any spilt dry litter in the base recess or around the top. We like to use a soft dustpan brush to easily access the inside of the Globe. Once you're finished cleaning the Globe, be sure that it is completely dry before adding litter to avoid premature clumping.
Do not submerge the base or bonnet in water. We recommend cleaning these with a damp rag or paper towel. Avoid any of the electronics or metal pieces. Again, do not spray any liquids directly onto the base or bonnet to avoid damaging the electronics. If you find excess build-up of litter you can vacuum it up prior to wiping it down to avoid litter streaking.
While wiping down the base, we recommend checking your DFI (Drawer Full Indicator) lenses. These are located just inside the waste opening on the base of the unit. If you see any residue on the clear plastic, wipe it off and make sure that the lenses are clean. Debris may cause the DFI to indicate a full drawer regardless of the waste in the drawer.
Once you are done cleaning your unit, let it dry fully then reassemble it. If it is not dry the litter will clump prematurely and may get clogged in the ports or litter pocket. Add your litter to the fill ridge line and let the unit complete an initial cycle. Press the RESET button when the solid blue light shows, as this will ensure that the automated cat sensor (CATS) is ready for your cat's next visit.
